Stilettoed Skylark

I photographed this Skylark today at Sorell, sitting as you can see on a fence wire. I more often associate seeing them sitting on posts or most frequently on the ground, but the photo highlights their incredibly long 'spurs'. Does anyone know what function they serve?

They'd be great for rock-climbing! Wow, that's some serious spurs there. They would probably help with balancing but you'd think they be more of a hinderance than a help.
